The role of breathwork and yin yoga in autonomic flexibility

Autonomic flexibility is the ability of our nervous system to restore homeostasis once our fight or flight response has been activated. Improving our autonomic flexibility improves our ability to adapt to changes in the environment.

We sometimes get stuck in our fight or flight state, obscuring our reality with mixed signals of danger, even when we are safe. In breathwork, we intentionally use activating and grounding breathing patterns, improving our ability to rebalance during times of stress.

In yin yoga, we hold poses for 3-5 minutes. targeting deep connective tissue. Each stretch brings our awareness further into the body. We connect with what arises and approach it incrementally with curiosity, compassion, and non-judgement.

How breathwork and yin yoga widen our window of tolerance

In breathwork, we use prolonged breathing patterns and holds to release tension and emotionality held in the system. This process helps us process and release trauma. From there, we are able to better tell when we are kicked out of our window of tolerance.

Our window of tolerance is the zone of arousal in which we are able to function and thrive. When we are in this zone, we are able to respond to the demands of life without much difficulty. Periods of extreme stress and trauma shrink our window of tolerance, causing us to get thrown off more easily.

The practice of breathwork and yin yoga help expand our window of tolerance, allowing us to move through life with more ease.

Other benefits of this practice

Through consistent practice, we are better able to regulate our emotions by tuning in to the wisdom of our bodies. From this place, we are able respond to the world rather than to react. We work to create an internal state of safety in the body rather than trying to control our external environment.

Other benefits associated with consistent practice include:

  • reduced stress and anxiety
  • increased ability to focus
  • enhanced sense of well-being
  • reduced inflammation
  • boosted immune function
  • increased stress resilience
  • improved joint mobility and fascial release

"Empowering, transformative, inspiring! This class was truly a gift!
The breathwork class was a distinctive combination of educational content, Yin Yoga and breathwork. It's truly been one of the best gifts I've given myself. Michaela and Geordan cultivated an environment of safety, acceptance and peace as they guided our class. This safety allowed me to learn, heal and grow over the eight weeks. The Yin Yoga set the stage for the breathwork, and Geordan was a calm, nurturing and patient guide. And with Michaela's guidance, the breathwork was transformative. She knows just when and how to support, encourage, and help move students forward. Over the eight weeks, I've noticed my window of tolerance has widened, my nervous system has relaxed and I'm able to show up in my life with more peace, agility and ease. Highly recommend! 🌟"

"I took the Yin Yoga & Breath Work course and highly recommend it! I was a bit nervous at first but Michaela and Geordan immediately helped me feel at ease. They truly care about your healing! By the end of the course I was less stressed, felt a weight had lifted from my heart and had a sense of well being. I’m walking away with a new set of skills that I can use daily to care for myself! 💕"

Yoga can heal emotional wounds

Our emotions—whether they be anxiety, depression, anger, or joy—have an influence on our body. It could be a raised heart rate, or decreased sensory awareness, or tension in your jaw. When we find where it’s being held, bring our attention to it, and use yoga to affect it, then healing can take place.

A lot of our emotional wounds have been stored in our body, and we need to move it out. We sometimes get stuck in fight or flight, meaning our body thinks we’re in danger even though we aren’t. The switch gets left on. Yoga has been shown to help flip the switch back to normal, and get us back into a restful state.

FAQs

  • Why is it important to connect your body and mind?

Just like any other organ, your brain is part of your body. You can’t move, act, or think without affecting your mind in some way, because they are connected. Sometimes our mind unconsciously creates unhealthy thinking patterns. Yoga helps bring awareness to your patterns, then uses your body to move through. It asks you to question what your body has been trying to tell you, but you’ve been too distracted to notice. When we quiet our minds and move with intention, we can get back into our bodies and use movement to move past mental roadblocks.
